Gimpo, promoted to the city status in 1998, is representative breadbasket region with wide Gimpo plains, where it started rice farming first in Korea.
A few years ago, floriculture and livestock industries were well developed. As the population increases and Seoul¡¯s industrial capacity is relocated, however, Gimpo experiences the onrush of industrialization.
In December, 2005, the number of companies registered in Gimpo was 15,078, and the employees numbered 81,235. In terms of business type, manufacturing has dominated the most, and is followed by Wholesale & Retail. Its favorable condition of location and convenient traffic network enable the city to house hi-tech industries. In 2006 alone, Gimpo¡¯s trade volume amounted to US$3,090 Million with US$1,915Million in export, and US$1,175Million in import.
Along with many cultural heritages including Mt. Munsu fortress, one can find great delight in the warm heart of Gimpo with green mountains and clean rivers.
Since early times, Gimpo has produced the best quality agricultural specialties from this gifted land with abundant sunlight, adequate rain and fertile soil. Especially, Gimpo rice, grown in the pristine reclamation area, takes pride in the feature of the high glutinousness.
Gimpo is rapidly transforming itself into the 21st century best city equipped with high-tech industry, a convenient economic city providing good environment for business based on culture, and an environment friendly city where green nature and resting place coexists. |
